Shui On understands that in order to uphold its green corporate culture successfully, we need a sound environmental management system, active staff participation and a constant strive for improvement. To achieve this, SOCAM has expanded its Safety Department into the Health Safety and Environment Department as well as formulated and implemented its Environmental Policy and Environmental Management System (EMS). In addition, the company organizes Health Safety and Environmental Target Seminars annually to set the coming years’ goals and work plans, which will then be cascaded to all staff for implementation.

To enable staff to carry out environmental management work efficiently, besides providing useful information on the corporate Intranet for staff, SOCAM also organizes various training programmes, such as ISO 14001 EMS Training, EMS implementation and auditing, and environmental orientation for workers. Information on trade-specific environmental aspects is also passed to relevant subcontractors to help them meet the company’s target. SOPM organizes numerous environmental protection awareness courses for its staff as well, and participates in environmental protection activities organized by the government and various environmental organizations.

In addition, Shui On implements a series of environmental conservation measures at its offices, including photocopying on both sides, recycling printed paper and utilizing information technology (Intranet, electronic posters and e-mails) for staff communication. The company also provides guidelines on energy conservation and encourages staff to switch off office equipment and appliances when they are not in use.

In January, the Construction Division organized a “Christmas card and calendar recycling campaign”. The old Christmas cards, New Year cards and calendars collected were given to environmental companies for recycling. The recycled paper products will be used for charity purposes. The Construction Division has also organized a “Used Toner Cartridges Collection Campaign” and discussed with the producer on the appropriate treatment of used toner cartridges.

Shui On also actively supports the Government’s environmental protection activities. Since 1999, the Group has been participating in a three-year “Corporate Afforestation Scheme” initiated by the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department to conserve the country parks. Led by Group Chairman Mr Vincent Lo, about 160 staff and their relatives have planted seedlings in the “Shui On Corporate Woodland” at Tai Lam Country Park. The seedlings are now growing extremely well.

Environmental protection is everybody's responsibility. We are pleased that Shui On has been honored with several environmental protection awards. We wil continue to do our best to contribute to the creation of a better environment.
